Guerilla Math

There's something happening on campus involving middle school aged children and their parents. Fancy ID badges, color coded t-shirts and all that.

As I was walking to my car this morning, I saw a parent and a few kids looking at a telephone pole. Like most of the telephone poles on and near campus, there were a jillion staples leftover from old flyers; they were amazed by all the staples. So I took the opportunity to tell them about the normal distribution and showed them how the highest density of staples (mean height) was around eye level and how it tapered off as you looked up or down the pole.
