That Which is Lacking

Done any math yet this weekend? Me neither.

Here’s a classic activity. I was reminded of it by a letter to the editor in The Mathematics Teacher. You should guess what’s happening as you carry out the steps. Those who are so inclined can figure out why this works.

  1. Start with a circular piece of paper.

  2. Put a dot somewhere on the circle (not at the center).

  3. Fold the paper so that the edge of the circle touches the dot.

  4. Unfold and repeat step 3.

  5. Keep repeating step 4.
