It's Not Easy Being Green

  1. Checking SiteMeter last night, I saw a referral from wah-hoo-wah.blogspot.com. (It was from someone hitting the "next blog" button on the Blogger bar -- not an actual link.) My first thought: Oh no, it's one of those Review guys. Clicked on the link. Yep. That's what it is. He writes an awful lot about pong. (Secret message: We didn't play pong at Panarchy.)

  2. Saturday's mail brought a missive from Hanover. It was the bill for my class dues. Despite claims to the contrary, nothing bad happens when you don't pay class dues. I've never paid class dues, and they still send the alumni magazine. While my class asks for money, the College never does: I told them not to, and they don't.

  3. Got an email from some local Dartmouth person. They are desperate for people to conduct admissions interviews. They don't want me to do interviews. Always the same awkward situation comes up:
    Me:
So, do you have any questions?

    Interviewee:
I hear that everyone really loves Dartmouth. Did you like it?

    Me:
I was miserable every minute that I was there. But I got a really good education.
Princeton seems to be similarly desperate, based on an interview I overheard at the cafe the other day. It was being given by an English professor who got her Ph.D. in comparative literature from Princeton. From what I overheard, I learned more about the professor than about the interviewee. She really shouldn't have dumbed down her description of her research; when you summarize your current interests as "Harry Potter fan-fiction," it doesn't really sound like you do serious scholary work.
