Diversions: More Problems to Work On

  1. Yesterday it was pretty clear that my mind was is in no shape to do math, so I drove around aimlessly for a while. I ended up going to a big used bookstore and to the goldfish store.

  2. How do I rearrange the furniture so that I can fit in a fish tank? As an added wrinkle, it needs to be a spot where I'm sure the floor can handle the weight. Water weighs 8.33 lbs per gallon, and glass and rock are heavy. (Here in the provinces the only way to get an acrylic tank is via mail order.) Each goldfish needs at least 10 gallons of water, and since fish get lonely, I'd want to get 3 fish.

  3. I bought a knitting book that references Elizabeth Zimmerman's Pi Shawl. There is so much to say about the Pi Shawl. Mostly that the only reason the freakin' thing lies flat is because it's knit at such a loose guage that wool will block flat. More on this later. Oh, trust me, more on this later.

  4. Seen but not bought at the bookstore: Cosmetology textbook. I'm right on my hunch about why I get this same annoying haircut all the time despite insisting otherwise. According to the book, certain face shapes require certain features in a haircut. The book uses the black and white language of "right" and "wrong" to explain this. Me without bangs? The book says "wrong."

  5. Isn't this cool?
