Falling Apart, Pulling Back Together

As predicted, the calculus exam was a bit of a disaster. Class average on the border between a C and a D.

About half the points were "take the derivative" questions, the hardest of them being identical to questions that appeared on review sheets. My sleep deprived and overworked students couldn't keep straight exponentials functions versus power functions or reciprocals versus inverses; they didn't recognize constants. Of the remaining problems, 10 points' worth came from the review sheet with the numebrs changed; the rest came from the review sheet, the worked out examples in the textbook, and the Chapter Review but with the SAME NUMBERS (and functions) as the originals.

I sent out a scary email. Already two students have stopped by my office.
