Writing the General Audience Research Statement

I spent yesterday drafting a research statement about someone else's research. The Topologist was nominated for some College award, and he needed to write a description of he research that would be read by people who are not topologists or geometric group theorists! Worse yet, not even mathematicians!

There's really no way to write about the homology of the mapping class group in a way that really wows a committee of arts and sciences faculty. Well, not without lying. Pure mathematics: not flashy.
