I Was Amazed that I Kept My Mouth Shut

I was at another meeting about improving education. This one was focussed on high school chemistry. The main idea was to improve chemistry education in rural areas by teaching the teachers about laboratory research projects that they could have their students do instead of tried and true lab activities where the answer was known ahead of time. The goal is to have high school chemistry students in rural areas doing chemistry research and making discoveries that are new-to-science.

No one (not even me!) suggested that we call upon place-based education and have the students develop safer ways of cooking meth.
